Golden Age Helps Celebrate the Start of the Holiday Season

dsc09664
Board members Linda Johnson and Lynn Baidack together with friendly Hospitality volunteers are ready to serve hot chocolate and cookies at the tree lighting ceremony.

On Monday, November 28, GRF sponsored a wonderful tree lighting ceremony at the area between the Health Care Center and the Administration Building. We provided hot chocolate and cookies for the several hundred shareholders who attended this festive event. It was a very cold evening for Southern California, so the hot chocolate line was packed. As you can see in the photo, we even added a dash of whipped cream. This was the kickoff for our Donor Wall project. Lynn Baidack gave a wonderful overview of this project, how it will benefit Leisure World, and how to get involved. Many shareholders visited our table to get more information about this exciting project.

The Donor Wall Project – Leave a Lasting Legacy

Golden Age Foundation Donate-A-Brick-and-Tile Fundraiser

Shareholders now have the opportunity to help the Golden Age Foundation fund a picnic area next to the future Multi-Use Courts to be constructed behind Clubhouse 2 in 2017.

We will be selling engraved commemorative walkway bricks and wall tiles that will be mounted behind the sundial on the south wall of the Amphitheater between the Administration Building and the Medical Center. You can individualize a brick or wall tile for yourself or your family, honor a loved one, commemorate a special occasion, or make a memoriam. Proceeds from this project will help fund a beautiful new picnic area in our community.

This is the area where the wall tiles will be mounted. Stop by the back of the amphitheater to see what the tiles look like on the wall.

Sales will begin at a fundraiser scheduled on Monday, November 28 at the 5:00 P.M. Holiday Tree lighting ceremony located in the future Donor Wall area. Stop by early to enjoy a cup of hot chocolate and cookies provided by Golden Age volunteers and visit with Golden Age Board members who can answer your questions and provide information about the fundraising project. You will also have the chance to see what the tiles look like when mounted on the wall. Walkway bricks and Donor Wall tiles will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis. There is a limited amount of bricks and tiles available for sale.

Order forms will be available after November 28 at the Hospitality Center in Clubhouse 6 from 9 A.M. to 11 A.M. and at the Mobility Aids office in Clubhouse 6 (behind the table tennis area) from 12:30 P.M. to 2:30 P.M. on the following dates: December 5, 6, 9, 14, 15, 19 , 22, and 23. You also contact Lynn Baidack, Golden Age coordinator for this project at 562-296-5342 (lbaidack@gmail.com)

This is a great holiday gift opportunity for you, and your family and friends. Your personalized brick or tile will leave a lasting legacy.

This mailbox in Clubhouse 6 can be used anytime for Membership and Donations

Some Golden Age members, depending on the month they joined, will be receiving membership renewal applications in the near future. We have recently changed to an annual renewal system to help ensure a sustainable membership base and a secure financial future. You may be in the first group to be asked to renew, so we hope you will take the opportunity to “re-up” with Golden Age for the coming year. Please remember that if you have a Lifetime membership, you do not need to renew, unless you wish to join at a higher level.
To renew your membership, you can send your application and check to Golden Age Foundation, P.O. Box 2369, Seal Beach, CA 90740 OR you can put your renewal materials into our new mailbox in Clubhouse 6. The locked mailbox is affixed to the wall next to the coffee service counter and is available for your convenience 24/7. We also have a supply of membership applications and brochures available at the mailbox for your friends and neighbors who would like more information about Golden Age and what we do for the community. Upon receipt of your membership application, we will send you a post card acknowledging your tax deductible contribution.
Your ongoing support is greatly appreciated.

Focus on Golden Age Foundation Members – Betty Coven, our Amazon Smile Cheerleader

By Marge Dodero, Golden Age “Storyteller”

May I introduce you to Betty Coven. I first met her at the Friday Sunshine Club, where we read the Golden Rain News, listen to great speakers and enjoy refreshments. I really liked Betty. She made some good comments, wasn’t a YES LADY, and could speak her mind!  I told her I was a Golden Age director and explained how much our volunteer organization depends on steady financial support. I asked Betty if she was interested in volunteering for Golden Age, as we always need new people to contribute their time or money or both. Betty laughed and told me she only had so much time and money and she needed to spend wisely.  She said she would consider being involved with Golden Age after she finishes her term as her President of her Mutual.

A hard worker all her life, Dr. Betty Coven is a licensed psychologist who practiced for many years. Now retired, she wants to enjoy her life just like everyone else. She no longer drives and plans ways to supply her needs without a car. She now orders everything on line, primarily from Amazon.com. Betty already knew that she could support us by using Amazon Smile and selecting the Golden Age Foundation as her designated charity. She even gave me directions…go to SmileAmazon.com for a complete list of participating non-profit organizations and either open an account or go to your established one. Scroll down to Golden Age Foundation (already listed) and order to your heart’s content. You get your order at your door in a remarkably short time and Golden Age gets a small percentage of every purchase.

Golden Age hopes to receive up to $800 this year from the Amazon Smile program. Nine thousand people live in Leisure World. If 50% of them used Amazon Smile to purchase holiday gifts, as well as shopping throughout the year and encouraged their family and friends to do so, our community could significantly increase the amount of rebates to Golden Age. In turn the Foundation will use these funds to benefit all of us. Thanks to Betty Coven for being an Amazon Smile customer who has designated the Golden Age Foundation as her favorite charity. Council on Aging Medicare Open Enrollment Clinic Helps 63 Shareholders

The Council on Aging Orange County is our newest partner. We’d like to give you an update on one of their projects that benefit everyone in Leisure World.

During the annual Medicare open enrollment period each year, the COAOC helps seniors and others receiving Medicare, such as those with certain disabilities, review their health care plans. The program is known by it’s abbreviation, HICAP (Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy).

A very successful Medicare Open Enrollment clinic was held in Clubhouse 3 on Monday, October 31. The clinic began at 9 a.m. and ended at 5 pm. The staff of 10 HICAP counselors were able to keep the flow of traffic going so there was very little wait time to see a counselor.

In 2015, COAOC had a Medicare Open Enrollment Clinic at the Los Alamitos/Rossmoor Library with an attendance of only 12 clients. This year, 63 shareholders took advantage of this free Medicare “checkup”. The Golden Age Foundation provided refreshments for the staff and their shareholder clients.

At the end of the day a tally of potential savings experienced by the attendees resulted in a annual potential savings of $22,000+ gained by either changing Medicare Part D or changing Medical Advantage plans. This is a savings of approximately $350 per shareholder!

The next review session is scheduled for November 16, 2016, in Clubhouse 3, Room 2. This session will begin at 10 a.m. and end at 5:00 p.m. There are still a few appointments available. Those wishing to schedule an appointment should call the Leisure World HICAP office at (562) 472-0275 Monday through Thursday from 9:00 a.m to 1 p.m.
