Mac Farland USA, an inspiring true film about a high school track team in the California central valley of Mac Farland, was co-sponsored by the Golden Age Foundation Friday evening, September 23 in the amphitheater. Over 100 people attended this inspirational film on a very pleasant fall evening – and no one left. In fact, everyone applauded at the end! Thanks to the many shareholders who participated in the pre-film 50/50 drawing. Part of the proceeds from this drawing helps fund many Golden Age projects in our community.

Rising Star Will Entertain at Golden Age Annual Dinner on October 15

Tom HoTom Tuxedorvath, a young up-and-coming singing talent, originally from Chicago, will be the featured entertainer at the Golden Age Annual Dinner gala on October 15. This year’s dinner theme is “Broadway Showcase.” Three Board members heard Tom perform at a special spring event showcasing local talent and were very impressed with his great voice and energetic presence. In addition, he is both handsome and humble!  Tom has a great repertoire of Broadway favorites that he will sing at the event.

Tickets go on sale on Monday, September 12 at the Hospitality Center in Clubhouse 6 from 10-11 a.m. weekdays. Tickets are $25 each or $200 for a table of 8. Tickets sell out quickly for this popular event. In addition to a delicious dinner and a special look at Golden Age accomplishments, this year’s event will include our first ever silent auction with some great prizes.

August 25 Shredding Event A Big Success

Golden Age members help with shredding

Hundreds of shareholders took advantage of the Golden Age sponsored shredding event outside Clubhouse 2 on Thursday, August 25. Several Golden Age Board members assisted residents with having their documents securely destroyed. Chairs were available for those waiting.  If you shop at Ralphs on Seal Beach Blvd, please thank their manager for donating several cases of water. On a warm August morning, a bottle of water was much appreciated by all. Thanks go also to Charlie Kress construction, who contributed the funds to pay for this shredding event. We are grateful for his support.

Golden Age Foundation Receives Boeing Grant

Golden Age Foundation Receives Boeing Grant

The Golden Age Foundation (GAF) has been awarded a $2,000 grant from the Boeing Corporate Citizenship Fund. This fund is supported by Boeing employees who allocate a portion of their salaries to assist qualified charitable organizations. Lynn Baidack, a Golden Age Foundation Board member, recently retired from Boeing, While still employed, Lynn obtained an invitation for the Golden Age Foundation to apply for a grant from this fund.
The Council of Aging of Orange County assisted us in the grant writing process. After reviewing our application, Boeing representatives did a site visit here. They had never been inside Leisure World and were very impressed with our wonderful community.

The Boeing staff were also amazed that the GAF has no administrative costs, because volunteers staff the Foundation’s program. Funds donated by many generous shareholders are used to offer free programs for Leisure World residents, including the Hospitality Center, the Mobility Aids program, the Income Tax program, and the Council on Aging of Orange County HICAP (Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy) program. The Golden Age Foundation, a charitable non-profit (501(c)3 organization, has been providing services in the Leisure World community since 1973. For more information about how to access Golden Age Foundation services, become a volunteer, or contribute financial support, call 562-431-9589 or visit our website at www.goldenagefdn.org

9,170 Volunteer Hours Donated Last Year to the Golden Age Foundation

150 Golden Age volunteers and community supporters attended the 18th Annual Volunteer luncheon on June 23 at Clubhouse 2. The theme, “Take Me Out to the Ballgame,” was enjoyed by all who feasted on an All-American meal of hot dogs, baked beans, potato salad…and, of course, apple pie! The meal was catered by Shirley Williams and her team, and the entire event was coordinated by Golden Age Social Chair Rosa Carrillo.

Volunteers in the Hospitality Center, Flu Clinic program, Tax program, and the Lifeline program, gave 9,170 hours of service last year. The Mobility Aids program doesn’t keep track of volunteer hours; thus, the total contribution may be close to 10,000 hours!! Volunteer pins were given to those who had accumulated between 100 and, in the case of Joe Capra, 6,500 hours!

The luncheon was underwritten by Bob Mc Cauley of Superwire. We are most grateful to him for his support of this important way of recognizing volunteers. The Suede Sole dancers, accompanied by vocalist Tommy Williams, performed 2 new routines, “Take Me Out to the Ballgame,” and “All My Exes Live in Texas.” Their new customers and lively dancing enlivened an already pretty lively event.

Special Board awards were given to Gail Levitt for her generosity in taking over the Hospitality Center last year, and to Tax Program chair Diana Lambert for her work success in growing the tax program.

Thanks to all our volunteers and to the many community leaders who support the Golden Age Foundation.

Who wouldn’t want to get free money? AmazonSmile is helping our community.

Last year the Golden Age Foundation enrolled in AmazonSmile, a rebate program for non-profit organizations like ourselves. For each purchase through the on-line merchant Amazon, we get a small % back to us. During our first quarter in 2015, we got a disbursement of $9 and change! Recently, we received a disbursement of $147 for the first quarter of 2016. This is real progress! There’s a lot of buying power in Leisure World and we can tap into this by encouraging others to participate in this program.

At the Seal Beach Chamber of Commerce expo, we talked to a new resident who recently ordered all her new furniture on Amazon but didn’t know about AmazonSmile. As more residents shop on-line, we have the opportunity to take advantage of this free money that can support Golden Age programs and projects. Sounds like we need a major publicity campaign!  We also need to encourage our shareholders to get their relatives and friends to sign up.

It’s easy to sign up and completely free! To enroll, go to SmileAmazon.com and scroll down to find Golden Age Foundation, Seal Beach, CA. Select Golden Age Foundation as your preferred donation site and then go through SmileAmazon each time you make a purchase.
